Born in 1942, Günther Schmid is a
graduate in political science of the Free University of Berlin,
where he also took his doctorate in 1973 (title: "Functional
Analysis and Political Theory"). In 1981 he received his certificate
of habilitation (title: "Structural Unemployment and Labour Market
Policy") at the Free University of Berlin.
From 1970 to 1974 he was assistant professor for political theory and
methodology at the Free University of Berlin. Since 1974 he has been
at the Social Science Research Center, from 1979 to 1989 as director
of the research area "Labour Market and Employment". In 1989 he was
appointed director of the research unit "Labour Market Policy and
Employment" and professor for economic theory of politics at the
Otto Suhr Institute of the Free University of Berlin. Günther Schmid
has been visiting professor at the University of Wisconsin at
Madison, Paris Sorbonne, Stockholm and Växjö (Sweden), at the
Institute for Advanced Studies in Vienna, the University of
Melbourne and the Netherlands
Institute for Advanced Studies in Wassenaar.
His research and publications focus on political economy, labour
market policy and employment, evaluation of public policy and
political institutions, political theory, comparative studies of
political systems and philosophy of science. Günther Schmid worked
as a consultant several times for the OECD in Paris and regularly
for the European Commisson in Bruxelles. He is member of several
advisory boards of institutes and organizations related to labour
market topics. In 2000 he was appointed as a member of the
Benchmarkng Group, the scientific advisory board of the "Alliance
for Work". In 2002, he was a member of the Commission on
"Modern Services for the Labour Market" (Hartz-Commission).
In 1997, Günther Schmid was awarded the Schader Prize for his
exceptional role in the dialogue between social sciences and
political practice. In 1999 the Fritz Thyssen Foundation awarded him
first prize for social science essays written in 1997 for his
article "The Netherlands as an Employment Miracle? A comparison
between the Dutch and German employment systems", which appeared in
the German journal "Leviathan" (vol. 25).Günther Schmid
was a member of the
¬European Employment Task Force set up by the European
Commission in 2003.

been a fellow of the Institute for the Study of Labour
¬IZA.
In
February and March 2005, Professor Dr.
Günther Schmid was invited by the University of Melbourne,
Australia, to present recent labour market-related research results
to Australian researchers, students and experts at several
institutions and occasions.
From 1 September 2005 to 31 January 2006, he followed an
invitation from the Netherlands Institute for Advanced
Study in the Humanities and Social Sciences in Wassenaar.

Professor Dr. Günther Schmid is a member of the editorial advisory board of the Journal of Industrial Relations (JIR) for a three year period from 2006-2009.
Günther Schmid has been rewarded one of three Honorable doctorates
2006 at Växjö University, Sweden. The ceremony at the university
took place on February 11, 2006.
