Born, 1943 in Stuttgart, Wolf-Dieter Eberwein grew up in Geneva and Cairo.
After graduating from highschool (Kepler-Gymnasium, Freudenstadt) in 1963, he
worked as a trainee in the editorial office of the
Schwarzwälder Bote.
From 1965-1970 he studied Political Sciences at the Otto-Suhr-Institute at the
Freie Universität, Berlin and graduated in 1970. After an academic year at
McGill University, Montreal, W.-D. Eberwein worked as scientific assistant with
Prof. Karl Kaiser at the University of Saarbrücken. Between 1973 and 1978 he
worked as an assistant lecturer at the Faculty of Sociology of the University of
Bielefeld where he got his PhD in social sciences (Thesis on: Structural Changes
and Adoption in the German Foreign Office, 1950-1973). In 1972 and 1977 Prof.
Eberwein worked among the academic commune at University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.
1982 he finished his postdoctoral thesis and officially acquired his
postdoctoral lecturing qualification at the Political science Faculty of the
Free University of Berlin. Since 1998 he has worked as Professor at the
University of Leipzig. From on 1978 he has worked at the Social Science Research
Center, Berlin - from 1978 until 1998 as scientific assistant with Prof. Dr.
Karl W. Deutsch in the Institute of Comparative Social Research, since 1998 Prof
Eberwein is head of the working group on International Politics.
As visiting professor, Wolf-Dieter Eberwein worked at the Institut des Hautes
Etudes Internationales, Geneva (1990-91) as well as at the Institut d'Etudes
Politiques Grenoble, France (2002).1994 (three month) and 1995 (two month) he
received a call as Directeur de Rerche Associé at the Maison
des Sciences de l'Homme in Paris.
Among others, Prof. Eberwein is Member of the Governing Council of the
International Studies Association (2002-2003), since 1990 Member of the Standing
Group of International relations of the European Consortium for Political
Research (ECPR). Between 1998 and 2000 he was Scientific Director of the
European Unversity Center for Peace Studies in Burgschlaining, Austria. Between
1993 and 1997 he worked as scientific advisor for the Society for Foreign Policy
in Berlin and in 2001 he was awarded membership in the Coordination Task Force
for Humanitarian Aid at the German Foreign Ministry. In 2000 Professor Eberwein
conducted a full scale evaluation study on the Balkans on behalf of the German
Red Cross.
The main focus of W.-D. Eberwein's research lies on theories of International
Politics, especially on international and inner-state violence, Conflict
Prevention, Foreign and Security Politics and the Politics of Humanitarian
Assistance.
