My research has always aimed at building bridges between three frequently differentiated fields: Macro-theories of social development, quantitative empirical research, and public policy debates. While the focus in my earlier positions used to be on welfare state comparisons, the current focus in Berlin is on institution-sensitive analyses of social structure combining quantitative data from surveys with qualitative data on institutional change in public programmes in a comparative perspective. Up to 2008 the emphasis was on comparisons of quality in life in the enlarged European Union, now the emphasis is on comparisons of the European Social Model and the United States and on the elaboration of transatlantic similarities and differences.
