The Political Sociology of Cosmopolitanism and Communitarianism

The project is linking the research units “Democracy: Structures, Performance, Challenges” (Director: Wolfgang Merkel), “Migration, Integration, Transnationalization” (Director: Ruud Koopmans), “Transnational Conflicts and International Institutions” (Director: Michael Zürn) and the WZB Rule of Law Center.

The focus lies on political cleavages relating to cosmopolitanism and to communitarianism and on related cleavages in the context of migration, political internationalization and neo-liberalism. Attitudes of elites and of populations on denationalization processes as well as on politicization and depoliticization processes and their impact on the quality of democratic regimes will be investigated.
