The research done in the unit up to 2006 led to the following
central conclusion: there is a reciprocal relationship between
internationalization tendencies (development of transnational
relationships and supranational regulation) on the one hand and the
behavior and institutional development of national or local actors
on the other. Internationalization strengthens the institutional
framework transcending national societies, but specifically as a
result of this the nature of national or local affectedness also
becomes more specific.
On the one hand, the implementation or diffusion of supranational
rules or concepts always demands the "translation" in national or in
other aspects subsidiary institutions and culture "on-site". On the
other hand, conflicts over supranational rules and decisions shift
the borders of national economies and societies are shifted through
sectors, types of companies, market segments and strategies.
International operating horizons mean that companies geographically
sort and distribute their business strategies, activities and
organizational types.
Marked effects develop between the aggregation and regulatory
levels: concepts or bodies of rules shift up to a higher level,
become universalized, become binding upon entities on lower levels,
and are developed further and adapted by these entities.
The tension between international fields of action, bodies of rules,
actors and other contingencies on the one hand, and national or
delimited subsidiary contingencies on the other hand, drives
processes of development of institutions and culture on different
levels. As a result the following research questions emerge
regarding:
- transfer and translation effects between levels (vertical) as
well as world regions and countries (horizontal)
- effects related to the resorting of economic activities and
organizational types between societies.
Internationalization can have very different consequences for
different societies. Its meaning for a society is determined not
only through supranational actors and institutions, but also through
interaction with them, through local actors (governments,
associations, companies) and their decisions. |

Research Questions and Fields of Activity |
|
|
|
| |
|
|
|
|
| |
Currently the following main fields of activity can be
differentiated according to research question:
- How do international business models and organizational forms
develop in high value added industrial and consulting services
- What is the relationship between European and national rule
making?
- How does the transport and logistic sector develop, in particular
in the context of international market liberalization?
- How is the reforming of Corporate Governance and industrial
relations in Europe constituted, especially with regard to the
institutional interaction between national models of corporate
governance/industrial relations and international developments?
- How can the mix of continuity and change in national and local
economic institutions and concepts be explained?
The current test for social institutions, which are important for
economic dynamics, is their suitability for the initiation of or
coping with processes of internationalization as described above, in
other words, of jointly amalgamated processes of supranational
regulation and market development on the other hand, and the further
development of domestic productive institutions on the other hand.
In following the questions outlined above the following three fields
of activity can be roughly differentiated:
- Transnational regulation/mediation and networking organization,
especially project development and research involving questions of
interrelated institutional dynamics of and relationships between
transnational re-organization and re-regulation
- Strategic and organizational development of multinational
companies, especially dynamics of and relationships between
transnational and local institutions, organizational contexts,
strategies, processes and structures
-
Transformation of Corporate Governance and industrial relations
in Europe, especially project development and research involving
questions of interrelated dynamics and of the relationships between
national models of Corporate Governance and Industrial Relations in
the firm, European legislation, and internationalization of capital
and product markets
