Pre-Doctoral Research Fellow (m/f/x)

The WZB is offering two positions as

to be employed for a duration of up to 3 years, preferably starting on 1 February 2020, with a work load of 65% of a full-time position (at present 25.35 weekly hours). The positions are subject to approval by a third-party donor.

The positions will be within the interdisciplinary research unit Migration, Integration and Transnationalization (MIT), headed by Prof. Dr. Ruud Koopmans. The researchers will contribute to the project “Transnational Perspectives on Migration and Integration” (TRANSMIT) conducted at the WZB within the framework of the DeZIM Forschungsgemeinschaft. TRANSMIT explores migration between Western Africa and Europe, with a focus on migration drivers and how migration processes influence prospects for integration in Europe.

The successful candidates will develop a common survey framework to answer overarching research questions related to these topics. In addition, they will focus on one of two regions, Senegambia (Senegal, The Gambia) or Nigeria, to investigate regional aspects in more detail. The research process will be embedded within the MIT unit and benefit from close collaboration with the TRANSMIT partner universities.

The unit is seeking to fill the two positions with researchers with complimentary skill profiles: one focused on Nigeria and the use of quantitative research methods (Profile 1), and one focused on Senegal/ The Gambia and the use of qualitative research methods (Profile 2). While the candidates’ work will take place mainly within their chosen profile, candidates should be willing to engage with both methods.

  • Presentation of research results at national and international conferences,
  • Profile 1/Nigeria: Quantitative analysis of observational and experimental data,
  • Profile 2/Senegambia: Interviews and other forms of qualitative fieldwork.

The researchers are encouraged to pursue a Ph.D. degree on a topic closely linked to the research project, preferably at Humboldt University Berlin and supervised by WZB researchers.
