1. Global Governance: Institutions, Authority and Constitutionalization

(Research Field of Michael Zürn)

The research field “Global Governance” sets out to develop a theory which can systematically describe and explain the emergence of authority and domination, i.e., institutionalized hierarchy, beyond the nation state. Of course international institutions like the United Nations Security Council or the World Trade Organization’s Dispute Settlement body exercise authority, and they do so in different ways. My research attempts to analyze the variety of forms which international authority can take, as well as to investigate the complexity of their interactions. In this context, the fragmentation of international institutions and the multilevel character of global governance are considered to be the central and determining features of institutionalized hierarchy beyond the nation state. Another aim of the research is to develop a comprehensive database for international institutions.
