The WZB is seeking to fill the position of

Head of the research group “National Educational Panel Study (NEPS)”
(m/f/x; for five years, possibly tenured)

Preferred start date is March 1, 2020.

The main task of the research group is to collect the NEPS data for the periods of school-to-work transition and adult education in Germany within the NEPS consortium. Its research focus is vocational education and training, labor market entry, adult education, and lifelong learning.

What we expect:

The successful candidate must be accomplished in sociology of education with focus on school-to work transitions (especially vocational education and training) and/or adult education. Candidates are expected to have a relevant research profile for “education and digitalization”.  The successful candidate must have a very good knowledge of the NEPS data (starting cohorts 4 and/or 6).

As the head of the NEPS research group, the successful candidate is expected to lead the NEPS research team at the WZB, to represent the WZB in the NEPS consortium (including the connected responsibilities and tasks) and to actively engage the work of the NEPS stage 6 (Vocational Education and Transition to the Labor Market) as well as of the NEPS stage 8 (Adult Education and Lifelong Learning). 

The successful candidate must have a doctoral degree in sociology with honors, a strong publication record (high-level international publications), excellent methodological skills in quantitative research (preferable also experience in data collection), experience in teaching and supervision, excellent German and very good English language skills. Her/his research should also complement the existing WZB research units – facilitating cooperation with other units within the cross-disciplinary research environment of the WZB – and experienced in knowledge transfer to the wider public. 

What we offer:

  • A fiveyear employment contract. The tenure decision of the WZB will also include criteria regarding performance as head of the research group and the work done in the NEPS consortium.
  • Remuneration equivalent to an associate professorship (German SW2-professorship).
  • An inspiring and very supportive research environment.
  • At a later stage, the position is intended as a joint appointment for an associate professorship (SW2-professorship, 5 years) in “sociology of education and digitalization” at the Freie Universität Berlin, Institute for Sociology. Applicants must meet the qualifications for appointment as a W2 university professor (§100 of the Berlin Higher Education Act, Berliner Hochschulgesetz). Teaching load will be one course per semester (2 SWS).

Applications must include the usual documents (curriculum vitae, list of publications), three selected publications, a copy of the Master’s degree and the doctoral degree certificate, information on teaching and supervision experience, a proposal of the applicant’s research ideas for the next 3-5 years (3 pages), and contact details of two referees.
