The Social Science Research Center Berlin (WZB), Department "Democracy and Democratization", is seeking for the period from 01.11.2018 to 31.03.2022, subject to approval by the third-party funding provider:
a research assistant
with 65% of the regular weekly working time (currently 25.35 hours)
for the collaboration in the DFG-funded project "MARPOR Manifesto Research on Political Representation" (Head: Prof. Dr. Bernhard Weßels). MARPOR (formerly CMP) is dedicated to the collection and comparable content analysis of election programs. MARPOR is supported by experts from over 50 countries. The project team coordinates data creation and evaluation. The aim of the project is to make the texts and the political preferences of parties from over 50 countries from 1945 to 2021 available to the scientific public (https://manifestoproject.wzb.eu).
The possibility to undertake a doctorate within the research areas of elections, parties or representation is available. In this case, a PhD topic in the field of empirical-quantitative manifesto research is desired.
Tasks: The creation of updates of the Manifesto Project Dataset (MPDS) and user-friendly tools for working with the data (data set documentation and tutorials), the application and further development of the Manifesto Corpus, communication with users of the data set (user enquiries and Twitter), cooperation with the organization of conferences and other events as well as cooperation with the reporting and publications of the project.
- Successfully completed studies in political science or a related discipline
- Interest in democracy, party and election research
- Knowledge in quantitative social research and/or computer-assisted content analysis
- Good knowledge of R, Stata, or Python (willingness to learn R if no knowledge)
- Ability to work both in a team and independently
- Good knowledge of German and English
- Experience in data organization and management and/or development of text corpora
- Knowledge of LaTeX
- Knowledge of Git
Remuneration: E 13 on the Wage Agreement for Public Service (TVöD) scale.
