Job description

The Berlin Social Science Center is searching for a

student assistant (f/m/x) for programming

in the department „Economics of Change“, led by Prof. Dr. Steffen Huck, starting from 01.10.2019 the earliest for one year (prolongation is possible)  for 10 hours per week.

The department uses economic experiments for problem-oriented basic research to better understand processes of change. In such experiments subjects interact simultaneously on multiple PCs or mobile devices. These experiments are implemented using the software package oTree, which is based on Python, Django, html and javascript.


Supporting the department in the programming of experiments for research purposes. This entails the collaboration with researchers of the department in designing, implementation, testing and deployment of experiments using oTree.

In case you have no prior knowledge of oTree, we expect that you use your working time primarily to learn it (software basis as well as advanced packages) for interactions in real-time (oTree-redwood).


We are looking for applicants who are in the late stages of their Bachelor’s or in the early stages of their Master’s (any field welcome) with an interest in programming (real-time) experiments for scientific purposes, a general experience in programming and good proficiency in English.

Experience in the setup of server-client structures (Windows as well as Linux Server), Python, html, javascript and websockets are an advantage.

Furthermore, knowledge of and an interest in economics and economic experiments is an advantage.
