Dr. Philipp Hessel

Philipp Hessel has been a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Research Fellow at the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute at the University of Basel since October 2021. Previously, he was Associate Professor at the School of Governance of the Universidad de los Andes, Bogotá. He studied sociology and social sciences in Berlin and Strasbourg and received his PhD in demography from the London School of Economics. Following his doctorate, he was a David Bell Post-Doctoral Fellow at the Harvard Center for Population and Development Studies. Dr Hessel's research focuses on the social determinants of health, with a particular focus on the role of social security systems, especially in Latin America. As a guest of the WZB research group "Health and Social Inequality", Dr Hessel will investigate the relationship between the representation of women in political office and the development and health of children in Germany.
