PD Dr. Dana Burchardt
Dana Burchardt is a Heisenberg Fellow at WZB. She received funding in the context of the DFG's Heisenberg Programme and is pursuing a research project entitled “Interacting Legal Spaces”. Previously, she was a visiting professor at the University of Bremen and Humboldt University Berlin, a senior research fellow at Freie Universität Berlin in the context of the Berlin Potsdam Research Group “International Rule of Law – Rise or Decline?” and an associated researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Research on Collective Goods in Bonn. She has also been an assistant professor at the China University of Political Science and Law and a senior research fellow at the Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law in Heidelberg. She received her doctorate from the Freie Universität Berlin and completed her “Habilitation” at the University of Bonn. She has studied law in Potsdam and Paris and has completed her first and second State Exam as well as a maîtrise en droit. Her research interests include international law, European and domestic constitutional law, interdisciplinary approaches to law, law and technology and legal theory. She has recently published a co-authored monograph titled “The Rule of Law in Germany: Bringing the Rechtsstaat into the 21st Century” (Hart Publishing 2025, together with Hannah Birkenkötter) and a monograph on “The Authority of International Courts: A Behavioural Framework” is forthcoming with Hart Publishing.
