Einstein Center Population Diversity (ECPD) - Mental Health in Migrant Families

Objective 2 of the Einstein Center Population Diversity (ECPD) – To understand mental health in migrant families.

The ECPD is a multi- and transdisciplinary research endeavour. The research is carried out by a consortium of seven partners in Berlin, including the WZB, that will study the consequences of increasing population diversity for social inequality and health disparities by focusing on the growing diversity of families, including changing conceptions and boundaries of the family itself.

Objective 2 assesses the somatic, psychosocial, educational, and environmental determinants of mental health in migrant families and uses multimodal approaches, integrating qualitative exploratory research and real-world laboratories with quantitative studies, to understand them.

Major goals of Objective 2 are to understand the role of diverse family and living arrangements, including transnational families, in shaping mental health outcomes and trajectories among migrants, with a strong focus on post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and dementia.

Research Questions:

- How do transnational family relationships affect migrant mental health?

- What are the main barriers to adequate care and limitations in quality-of-care pathways faced by diverse migrant groups and their family members?
