WZB researcher Irene Pañeda-Fernández has been awarded for her study on the effects of natural disasters on redistribution preferences. She was awarded the "ESR Prize for the Best Article of the Year 2023" at the annual conference of the European Consortium for Sociological Research (ECSR).
In her study, the sociologist found that the risk of surprising disasters such as earthquakes and tsunamis increases the demand for redistribution. The risk of predictable disasters, on the other hand, has no influence on attitudes towards redistribution.
The prize is awarded annually by the European Consortium for Sociological Research (ECSR) and the European Sociological Review (ESR). It recognises papers that demonstrate rigorous empirical-theoretical sociological research.
The article "Natural Disasters and Preferences for Redistribution: The Impact of Collective and Abrupt Disruptions" was published in the journal European Sociological Review (ESR).
