Standing up for Science
The March for Science attracted thousands of people around the world on April 22, 2017. These protest events were triggered especially by attempts of the US government to curb — for political reasons — scientific freedom, to cut infrastructures, and to proclaim “alternative facts.” The documentary by WZB fellow Dieter Rucht focuses on the March for Science in Washington, D.C. It follows the journey of a group of students from Pennsylvania to Washington, the course of the event in the capital and, above all, the challenges regarding the preparation of the march from the perspective of four key organizers. Their statements illustrate the difficulties in reconciling scientific neutrality with political engagement.
