Prof. Dr. Herman van de Werfhorst
Herman van de Werfhorst is professor of sociology at the University of Amsterdam, and co-director of the Amsterdam Centre for Inequality Studies (AMCIS). His work concentrates on the role of institutions for inequalities in and through education. He combines comparative research designs with longitudinal designs using panel data and register data. He currently directs a large research project funded by a Vici Grant by the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research NWO, with five team members. His publications appeared in many different journals in sociology, political science, education, and economics. Before coming to Amsterdam, he worked at Nuffield College in Oxford, and the Radboud University Nijmegen (where he obtained his PhD). Besides his academic work, Van de Werfhorst is member of the Education Council ("Onderwijsraad"), the highest advisory body for the Dutch government and parliament on issues related to education.
