Data protection and digitalization
The issue of data protection cannot be separated from the politics of digitalization. Data protection is a fundamental right that is often considered endangered in the digital era. At the same time, data protection can be seen as a regulatory tool box that can help us to cope with the risks to individual and collective self-determination associated with the digital transformation. Yet, the aims and means of data protection are often contested. This research project made sense of the debates in the field of data protection. Building on discourse analysis, it explored the ways in which actors criticize and justify their understandings of data protection. The project thereby focused on the tension between individual and collective understandings of data protection, which became particularly evident in the debate about the principle of “consent”.
