Science Contestations

Since January 2024, Soysal has been co-leading a new SCRIPTS thematic group on contemporary contestations of science. In line with this thematic group, we are developing science as a new line of research focus in Global Sociology. Using large-scale representative surveys and online survey experiments, we will map (pro- and anti) science attitudes globally and determine their different correlates at the individual and country level, as well as the global processes that shape these attitudes. In particular, we will analyze the extent to which the contestation of scientific knowledge manifests itself as mistrust of science and scientists and their epistemic authority in collective decision-making.
