Friends of the WZB Award

Werner Krause is the recipient of this year’s Friends of the WZB Award for his investigation into how centrist political parties react to the electoral successes of radical-right and populist parties.

Krause co-authored the article “The Causal Effect of Radical Right Success on Mainstream Parties’ Policy Positions: A Regression Discontinuity Approach” with the political scientist Tarik Abou-Chadi. Their piece reveals that established parties only start focusing on a specific political issue once a new party has gained traction with it. The jury praised the productive change of perspective in the question, as well as the fact that the authors were able to break new ground by setting a threshold to measure how and when political issues are taken up by parties. This enabled them to identify the entrance of a new party into parliament as a catalyst.

The Friends of the WZB Award was first granted in 2015. It honors academic contributions that exemplify the WZB’s core research aims of approachable, problem-oriented basic research of general societal relevance. The Friends of the WZB contribute €500 in prize money, which is matched by €500 in research funding from the WZB.

The award ceremony will take place in May 2019 as part of the Friends of the WZB member’s evening at the Max Liebermann Haus, which belongs to the Berliner Sparkasse’s cultural foundation.
