Uneducated Youth – Expensive for Society

Year after year, approximately 150,000 young people who have not completed higher education enter the job market. If this number is not cut by half, state budgets will be burdened with 1.5 billion Euro per birthyear. This is shown in a study by the WZB.

Inadequate vocational training leads to subsequently high costs for society. Year after year, approximately 150,000 young people start out without any higher education, and thus with unfavorable perspectives for a future in the workplace. If this number is not successfully cut by half, state funding will be burdened with 1.5 billion Euro per birthyear. This is shown by a WZB study commissioned by the Bertelsmann Foundation. These costs result from the loss of income tax and contributions to employment insurance in the period of gainful activity, as well as for the provision of unemployment benefits and necessary social transfers.

Authors of the studies are Prof. Jutta Allmendinger (WZB), Dr. Johannes Giesecke (Universität Bamberg) and Dirk Oberschachtsiek.
