World Politics - Governance in the 21st century

How is a world ruled in which there are no hegemons, large blocs directed by superpowers or self-asserting supranational institutions that make the final decisions? In the September issue of WZB-Mitteilungen, researchers introduce the concept of global governance.

The researchers are dedicated to questions posed by a fundamentally changed, post-Cold War, world order. There are emerging and self-confident powers that want to have their say; non-governmental organizations involved in decision-making; international rules and standards about trade, health, security and peacekeeping that do not form a coherent overall system. And in nation-states a public is developing that deals critically with decisions at the supranational level and demands better justification of decisions that often have far-reaching consequences for citizens.
