Im WZB-Forschungsprojekt „Internationalization of Vocational and Higher Education Systems“ wurden beide Reformen analysiert.

Presentation by Martin Ehlert and Jan Paul Heisig (WZB) at the CO:STA Colloquium
Description

As empirical tests of causal claims derived from theories become more important in the social sciences, researchers who rely on observational data are confronted with with the inadequacy of their data sets for estimating causal effects. Unlike experimental designs, researchers cannot influence the assignment of the treatment, which leads to biased results. For example, the (self) selection of more talented people into training programs influences the estimation of the programs' efficiency, when we simply compare participants to non-participants.

Bologna and Copenhagen

Two cities are models for European education reform: Bologna for higher education and Copenhagen for vocational training. The effects of both reform processes are subject of heated public debate. But what are the shared fundamentals and ideas behind the reforms?

Discussion Paper

Wherever citizen participation is strong, there is less corruption. Benny Geys and Nicolas Grießhaber have reviewed this thesis, broadly present in research, within 20 European democracies. Their conclusion: It depends on the type of participation.

How can new forms of participation strengthen representative democracies? Does more political involvement increase their stability and legitimacy? These questions are at the center of WZB guest scholar Thamy Pogrebinschi’s research project.

WZBrief Arbeit

The state of social and healthcare professions in Germany does not look good. In spite of a significant growth in personnel over the past years, the workload has increased immensely. In the new, WZB scholars Dietmar Dathe, Franziska Paul and Stefan Stuth analyze working conditions in social services.
