Projekt

Current issue of WZB-Mitteilungen

"Power and Powerlessness – States, Coalitions, Institutions” is the topic of this September’s WZB-Mitteilungen: WZB democracy researchers surrounding Wolfgang Merkel analyze the theoretical background of current events in North Africa and the Mideast, while Benny Geys takes a look at the political costs of war. Autumn Lockwood Payton is interviewed on the coalition of small states that helped create the International Criminal Court in The Hague. In addition, Stein Ringen offers insight into the complex interplay of power and authority.

The number of think tanks has increased significantly over the last ten years. This growth also makes it more difficult for journalists to navigate through the jungle of experts and studies. A newly developed website, codeveloped by WZB researcher Dieter Plehwe, should assist journalists in locating comprehensive information about European think tanks quickly.

Lecture by Catherine Hakim

Sociologist Catherine Hakim from the London School of Economics introduces her new book “Honey Money: The Power of Erotic Capital”, published in German by Campus Verlag. “Erotic capital”, Hakim states, “is what economists call a ‘personal asset’, ready to take its place alongside economic, cultural, human and social capital.”

Pressemitteilung

Press release

The UN Security Council agreed upon sanctions against Libya, however, up to now, has objected to further resolutions against Syria. How are such selective decisions made? When does the UN Security Council take action in humanitarian states of emergency and when does it not? WZB researcher Martin Binder examined 44 humanitarian crises from 1991 to 2005 with this question in mind. The result: Intervention follows particular patterns.
