Scientists in Germany have few incentives to develop inventive ideas and test them in practice. One reason is that in academic competition, patents bring fewer points than publications. Detours through the world of business are also barely rewarded. Using the example of biotechnology, the authors of the current WZB Letter on Education show what impedes the transfer of knowledge from research into practice.

Studie

Research

Women donate more than men, old more than young. That, however, is only true for monetary donations. In the case of donating blood, social and financial differences are of far less importance. These are results from a study on Germans’ willingness to make donations by Eckhard Priller (WZB) and Jürgen Schupp (DIW) based on data from the "Socioeconomic Panel" (SOEP).

Discussion paper

In the United States the financial crisis led to significant upheaval: Unemployment is at a high. In Germany too, in spite of positive economic activity, only temporary or part-time jobs are being created. What does this mean in concrete terms for people in both countries? The Life Course Risks Project analyses “The Economic Consequences of Key Life Risks in Germany and the US and Their Evolution since the 1980s”.
