Abstract

The project collects original, geospacial data on ethno-religious organizational infrastructures (associations, houses of worship, groceries, etc.) in Germany and combines them with survey data to investigate beneficial and detrimental effects of ethnic enclaves and segregation on immigrant integration and wellbeing, and how these differ across ethnic groups and generations. Results show that cultural distance of migrants' sending countries to receiving societies is a major driver of the establishment of distinct minority civil societies, which enhance life satisfaction particularly for migrants oriented towards their origin countries.

Abstract

Government hacking is a practice that may involve malicious code and the use of vulnerabilities in systems to obtain information desired by authorities. The legal uncertainty regarding spyware tools used to achieve this goal, however, are of particular concern to civil society as contracts between companies and public authorities related to these surveillance tools continue with little or no oversight. Given this scenario, the main objectives of this project are to

Abstract

According to the latest report by the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, emissions of greenhouse gases due to human activities have been responsible for an increase of approximately 1.1°C in global temperatures compared to the early industrial era (1850-1900). This research project focuses on the socio-economic consequences of climate change and, in turn, on the role such socio-economic factors play in determining migration decisions. In detail, this project examines the adverse effects of climate change especially on economic activity and human health (e.g., measured in terms of economic growth and child mortality). Socio-economic conditions, in turn, are well-known push factors of migration.

Abstract

In recent years, the issue of immigration has become increasingly tied to the issue of terrorism. For instance, a 2016 Gallup poll across 14 European countries found that a median of 66 percent of respondents believed terrorism by non-residents to be a serious problem, while at the same time a median of 55 percent of respondents thought that migration is a similarly serious issue, with concerns about both issues being strongly positively correlated. This research project aims to answer three interrelated research questions. First, what are the determinants of terrorism? Second, what are the policy consequences of terrorism?

Abstract

This project inquires how democratic decline has affected highly-skilled (im)mobility beyond exile and forced migration in the last decade. Acknowledging that migration is a multi-causal phenomenon and autocratization is only one of numerous (e)migration drivers it will scrutinize voluntary highly-skilled (im)mobility in two of the top four autocratizing countries worldwide in the last decade: Turkey and Hungary.

Abstract

The "house of Islam" has become the house of war, terror, economic stagnation and dictatorship in many places. More and more Muslims are fleeing dictatorship and lack of freedom, terror and war, poverty and unemployment to the West - bringing with them not only their culture, but often also the problems of the Islamic world. Ruud Koopmans shows for the first time, on a broad empirical basis and by systematically comparing Muslim and non-Muslim countries and migrant groups, how the Islamic world on the one hand and Muslims in the West on the other are falling further and further behind in terms of democracy, education and economic situation.

Abstract

This book focuses on Islamic constitutionalism, and in particular on the relation between religion and the protection of individual liberties potentially clashing with shariᶜa and the Islamic ethos. The analysis goes from general to  particular, starting with a theoretical overview on constitutionalism, human rights and Islam, moving to the assessment of the post-Arab Spring Constitutions of Egypt and Tunisia, and concluding with a specific focus on the rights of sexual minorities and freethinkers.
