Abstract

SRM Special Issue: Learning Through Failures

In recent years, social scientists have increasingly relied on survey experiments to estimate causal effects. As with any experimental design, survey experiments can fail, deviate from (preregistered) plans, or yield results that researchers did not anticipate. Researchers find themselves in situations with null, unexpected, inconsistent, or inconclusive results and must then decide if these are a product of the theory being tested, the experimental design, or both.

Abstract

Since January 2024, Soysal has been co-leading a new SCRIPTS thematic group on contemporary contestations of science. In line with this thematic group, we are developing science as a new line of research focus in Global Sociology. Using large-scale representative surveys and online survey experiments, we will map (pro- and anti) science attitudes globally and determine their different correlates at the individual and country level, as well as the global processes that shape these attitudes.

Abstract

The project investigates the role of civil society in countering digital disinformation. We focus on crucial political moments, such as elections and referenda, and on contexts of high polarization, to understand how civil society addresses current challenges to democracy. Building upon previous research, this project zooms in on moments of stark political polarization, where disinformation has presumably had significant effects on democratic processes and outcomes.

Abstract

Universities are simultaneously tasked with producing knowledge and upholding excellence, while also enacting equality and meritocratic participation amidst global moves toward the democratization of education. Universities in different national contexts have been implicated in this tension, and diversity has emerged as an increasingly expected institutional value in higher education systems worldwide.

Abstract

In this new line of research, we bring global cultural dynamics to the study of global health trends and outcomes. In a Berlin University Alliance (BUA) funded collaborative project, focusing on migration, gender, and health nexus, we examine global health concerns regarding preventive medicine (e.g. vaccination, cancer screening). While previous studies emphasize systemic factors (such as access and discrimination) that affect migrant participation in healthcare, the possible individual-level mechanisms at play are less well-known.
