Mit dem Fall der Mauer vor 20 Jahren wurde die Teilung Deutschlands beendet und der Weg zur Einheit Deutschlands begann. Die Sektion Soziale Indikatoren lädt an diesem historischen Jahrestag zu ihrer Tagung  nach Berlin ein, um anhand von sozialen Indikatoren sowie empirischen Analysen den bisherigen Verlauf der Vereinigung der Lebensverhältnisse in den alten und neuen Bundesländern zu bilanzieren.

Professor Phyllis Moen provides a very brief history of the work-family intersection from a US vantage point, along with an overview of organizational response by employers to the ‘work-family’ conundrum. She introduces the concepts of the ‘gendered life course’ and ‘life-course fit’ to provide a broader, dynamic, and contextual perspective on the match or mismatch characterizing the social environments confronting male and female workers, their families, and their communities.

Im Herbst 2007 endete in Pakistan offiziell die Militärherrschaft von Pervez Musharraf. Wahlen im Frühjahr 2008 setzten eine zivile Präsidentschaft ein. Die pakistanische Zivilgesellschaft hatte vor allem durch eine starke, spontane Protestbewegung der Anwälte gegen militärische Justizwillkür großen Anteil an diesem hoffnungsvollen, demokratischen Neuanfang. Heute, zwei Jahre später, entwickelt sich Pakistan innenpolitisch wieder zunehmend krisenhaft. Die Sicherheitslage bleibt schwierig. Die wirtschaftliche Situation und die Energieversorgung sind fragil.

Coming to terms with a painful past is crucial for the social reconstruction of societies emerging from armed conflict or totalitarian rule and facing a legacy of large-scale atrocities against humanity. Yet, memory is a double-edged sword: It can either lead to mutual understanding that overcomes existing ethnic, religious or social cleavages and thereby fosters sustainable peace, or it can perpetuate cleavages and thereby harden existing tensions and re-open new conflicts.
