The Covid-19 pandemic and the associated measures to contain the virus led to major changes in the world of work and created particular challenges for parents. As part of a joint project with the Institute of Economic and Social Research of the Hans Böckler Foundation (WSI), we are examining the medium- and long-term gender-specific effects of the Covid-19 pandemic on employment, income, and careers. While the research team at the WSI analyses observational data from the HBS Employment Survey and the IAB-PASS, the research team at the WZB is focusing on the collection and analysis of experimental data.

Families are increasingly outsourcing care and nursing activities. For example, care homes and mobile care services are increasingly replacing informal support from relatives. At the same time, women and men are reorganizing the distribution of paid and unpaid work and young children are no longer cared for exclusively by their mothers, but also by daycare centers and increasingly by fathers. Building on the results of the BMBF-funded project “The Social Psychology of Care Work” (duration 01/2012 - 07/2018), this project analyzes the effects of these changes on social inequalities in several thematically and methodologically linked sub-projects. Why is the pay for social services still low despite the high demand for care workers?

Within the framework of the Federal-Länder Program for the Promotion of Young Scientists (Nachwuchspakt), the aim was to create an alternative career path for young scientists that is characterized by better planning and security. Based on the tenure system already in use in Anglo-American countries, 1000 tenure-track professorships were chosen in two selection rounds (2017, 2019) at 75 universities, which will be funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research until 2032.
We are in a state of exceptionalism with the Corona pandemic, which makes existing gender inequalities more visible than ever. Initial research findings show: The crisis is apparently burdening women - and mothers in particular - more than men. For this reason, the Berlin Senate for Health, Care and Equality commissioned the WZB with a study to investigate the short-term and medium-term effects of the Corona pandemic on the social and economic situation of women in Berlin.
Study objective
Four key questions will be addressed in this study:
1) What is the impact of COVID-19 on gender inequalities in the labor market, in the adoption of care work, and in subjective well-being?
2) What are the socio-demographic differences?
