Description

Abstract

The overall goal of the Horizon Europe funded collaborative project FORSEE is to develop a novel approach to Artificial Intelligence (AI) governance that can effectively steer AI development towards more successful outcomes for society as a whole, based on a new evaluative framework for assessing AI applications. Expanding and contesting visions that define AI strictly in terms of technological and economic efficiency, the project aims to develop a nuanced and enriched notion of success that will guide future AI applications and policy efforts.

Abstract

The ORA-funded project is a collaboration between the WZB Politics of Digitalisation Group (coordinator), the CNRS Centre Internet et Société (CIS) in Paris, France, and the Université de Montréal, Canada. The project considers that Digital Sovereignty (DS) claims, policies and practices are key expressions of shifting power relations in a world marked by digital interconnectedness and (geo)political tensions.

Kai Barron and South African health scientists have investigated the effects of South Africa's alcohol ban during the Covid19 pandemic.

A new policy brief by WZB researchers Carla Hornberg, Heike Solga and Jan-Paul Heisig of the MapIneq project (Mapping inequalities through the life course) discusses how young people's wellbeing can be fostered through facilitating their entry into the labor market. Research has widely demonstrated that this transition phase strongly influences subsequent career paths and success in other life domains, such as family formation.

Abstract

Social media platforms continue to be a central place for discussing political issues. Unlike in non-digital spaces, however, there are specific digital architectures and organizational processes that structure these discussions and thus also influence their contents. The project gets to the bottom of these structuring factors. From the theoretical perspective of the “deliberative systems approach”, it sheds light on the influence of these factors on democratic systems at the micro, meso and macro level. To this end, it draws on empirical findings from studies with very different subject areas and gains insights into the development of democratic quality under these influences.
