Description
Influencers are everywhere. Because their lives and personalities are on display, we often think that we know them. Yet behind the scenes, the economic and professional structures of content creation are dizzying complex. Drawing on in-depth ethnographic fieldwork with influencers as varied as vegan YouTubers, dads of Instagram, and self-described drama commentators, I demystify the content creator economy, explaining its long history and the pitfalls of its professionalization. Aspiring creators often dream of a better life in social media careers.

Abstract

In 2010, Stuttgart witnessed a major protest wave against the construction of an underground railway station. Despite the local character of the conflict about “Stuttgart 21”, there has been nationwide news coverage of the protests and public debates about consequences for civic participation and the democratic culture in Germany. Journalists and other observers speculated about the social and demographic background of the protesters, about their motivations, and their self-perception as citizens. In a survey at one of the regular Monday demonstrations (N=858) these questions were addressed in a systematic and reliable way.

Workshop
Description

The workshop’s primary aim is to shift the debate from comparative statistics to models which emphasize the dynamics of international institutional variation and change by focusing on the further development of key insights from historical institutionalism such as (but not limited to) path dependence, unintended consequences, timing and sequencing effects and critical junctures. The issues addressed should be international in character, with an explicit focus on international institutions or the interaction of domestic and international levels.
