This study sets out to study residential mobility and its consequences for subjective wellbeing among ethnic minorities in Germany. As integration and social upward mobility increase, so does the desire for residency in affluent suburban neighborhoods and home ownership. At the same time, research suggests that ethno-religious community embeddedness may act as a bedrock of a high quality of living among persons of immigrant origin. We therefore intent to study the subjective well-being of persons of immigrant origin living in (suburban) mainstream neighborhoods vis-á-vis those residing in ethno-religious communities, with a special interest in studying those who have actually moved between neighborhoods.
In the context of the research on the emergence of an Internet policy field in Germany, the research group “Politics of Digitalization” analyzed the institutionalization of Internet policy in German ministries. Building on a historical analysis of organizational charts and narrative interviews with senior officials, we reconstructed how public and professional discourses materialized in ministries through the emergence of new organizational structures. Using a field theory approach, we further assessed how several German ministries sought to position themselves in the new field of digital policy by creating competencies for Internet-related issues.
The 2013 revelations by Edward Snowden and subsequent inquiries revealed that communications surveillance takes place within long-lasting, bilateral and multilateral agreements between signals intelligence (Sigint) agencies. In her dissertation project, Ronja Kniep reconstructs the transnational field of signals intelligence along three cases: Telegraph surveillance during the Second World War; satellite surveillance by the ECHELON program during the Cold War; and Internet surveillance in the NSA-BND programme EIKONAL. The project has three goals. First, it identifies the rationalities and rules of Internet surveillance in contrast to previous forms of surveillance.
The research project investigates the change of job-related tasks and the resulting skill requirements in the automotive industry using the example of the Volkswagen Group. The focus is on two central processes: digitalization and the shift toward electromobility. Digitalization includes changes in the area of products (autonomous driving, the connected car) and processes (Industry 4.0). Electromobility implies a comprehensive change in the workforce structure of the automotive industry, as knowledge and competencies in the area of combustion engine technologies are losing importance and new competencies and knowledge need to be developed.
The rapid development of digital technology has been impacting democratic governance in unprecedent ways.
