The TRANSMIT research network examines migration as a complex, transnational, and social process. Its goal is to gain a deeper understanding of the dynamics of this process by analyzing the interactions between migration, integration, and border and migration policies across countries of origin, transit, and destination. TRANSMIT focuses on two regions of particular relevance to Germany in the context of migration: the Middle East and North Africa (MENA region) and West Africa. Since 2019, the team has been developing a comprehensive data infrastructure that enables transnational research on migration.

The Fairwork secretariat is a cooperation between the WZB Social Science Centre and the Oxford Internet Institute (University of Oxford) dedicated to the research and evaluation of working conditions on digital platforms.
Digital labour platforms provide important income opportunities for millions of people all over the world. Most platform workers, however, are either not protected by existing employment law or collective bodies. Consequently, platform workers often face low wages and precarity as well as poor and dangerous working conditions.
This project examines the so far obscure connection between perceived and actual xenophobia and discrimination empirically with the help of online trust games with non-hypothetical vignettes. One of the Enigmata, the investigations on perceived xenophobia raised the counterintuitive finding is that better integrated people with a migration background are particularly discriminated against, but is this true?
The development of artificial intelligence (AI), and in particular of machine learning (ML) technologies, in workplaces is transforming the nature of work and skills. The project addresses this transformation by (1) analysing the challenges of ML systems for work practices; (2) examining skill requirements for different groups of workers interacting with ML (workers, developers and users); and (3) developing criteria for the design of work, skill formation approaches and skill-enhancing ML systems, focusing on transparency and explainability. These goals are addressed through an interdisciplinary co-design approach.

The democracies in the European Union and around the world are facing major challenges. Populist parties are gaining more and more support among the population, and even anti-democratic forces are becoming increasingly visible. Political science can make an important contribution to strengthening democracies by helping to better understand these processes and to find answers to the challenges that arise.
