The project compares the contexts in which Germany and Brazil developed their own regulations and intermediary liability systems dedicated to social media platforms. It also investigates their role of such regulations in the digital environment, their application and effectiveness for relevant online speech events since their promulgation and also the role of events, actors and interests that have pushed the policy-making process in this area.
The research project "Generative Artificial Intelligence in the World of Work" (GENKIA) is investigating the significance of generative AI for individuals, organisations and professions. It aims is to capture the experiences of workers with generative AI and to analyse possible impacts on employment and quality of work. We will also explore the conditions under which work processes can be supported by the use of generative AI.
Cohesion, solidarity and a sense of belonging are the cornerstones of human coexistence and a functioning democracy. They are of enormous importance for individual well-being, culture, sport and many other areas. It is therefore crucial to understand how social cohesion can be identified and measured, what promotes solidarity and cooperation, and what helps to counter polarization and exclusion. This project examines social cohesion from the perspective of young people - those who are at the transition from school to working life and will shape the future. How do young adults assess and view social cohesion?

In light of major demographic changes, including population ageing, changing family structures, and women’s raising employment rates, paid domestic support services in private households are becoming more and more important. Services such as childcare, elderly care, and cleaning are increasingly offered via digital platforms, such as Care.com, Helpling, Sitly or kleinanzeigen, where service providers offer their work and households or families seek support. How do seekers select service providers? What strategies do service providers use to secure good job offers? To understand the selection processes in these online markets, the project team draws on sociological and socio-psychological theories.
At a time of significant demographic and technological change, the question of whether and how long people work has increasingly gained economic, political, and social relevance: How have working hours and working hour preferences of different socio-demographic groups evolved over time? How do contextual characteristics—particularly working time regulations—influence social inequalities and the reconciliation of work and private life? And how reliably can we measure working hours in the era of remote work, flexible schedules, and blurring boundaries between work and private life?
As part of the Summer Institute in Computational Social Science (SICSS), the research group engages in international social science methods training and continuing education for advanced MA students, doctoral candidates and postdocs. SICSS-Berlin focuses on digital texts, including data collection through web scraping, data cleaning, as well as various quantitative text analysis methods and procedures. The teaching program features lectures, group tasks and participant-led group research projects.

The European Commission is a pivotal agenda-setter for European digital policy, not the least because of its powers in governing the internal market and the external trade relations of the EU. In digital policy, the Commission has to balance partially contradicting goals such as fostering innovation and economic growth, ensuring the protection of EU citizen’s rights, and managing the security vulnerabilities of networked societies. For these choices, not only rapid technological change and domestic politicization but also international competitive pressures in economic, normative, and security terms matter. How do such international pressures shape the Commission’s “European third way” of digital policy?
Objective 6: To evaluate the relation between family diversity and educational inequalities
Objective 6 aims at examining how and through which mediating channels family diversity influences children’s educational success.
The creative arts are characterized by high degrees of competition and unequal levels of success and fame. The number of highly successful artists pales in comparison to the number of those who live and work under precarious conditions. With a focus on contemporary German literature, this research projects studies the extent and the reasons for gender inequalities in a field that is characterized by great disparity and ambiguity. Do men and women write different types of books? Are they published by different publishers, reviewed differently and with different frequency? Who wins what book prizes?
