Jan C. Behrends worked in the research group "Civil Society, Citizenship, and Political Mobilization in Europe" from 2005-2011. He has written extensively on the public sphere in Communist dictatorships which was the subject of his dissertation. Behrends has also published on xenophobia and anti-Americanism, and the leader cult. At the WZB he works on an urban history book which will compare Moscow, Chicago, and Berlin around 1900. He teaches East European History at the Humboldt University and the Free University, Berlin

His research interests include Polish history of the 19th und 20th century, Communist dictatorships in Eastern Central Europe, Minorities and nationalism in Eastern Europe and Movie history, analysis of feature and documentary films.

Former Research Fellow of the Research Group: Civil Society, Citizenship, and Political Mobilization in Europe. Mundo Yang's main research interests are: public sphere, mass media and protest politics. After working in the research project about the global justice movements "DEMOS" (link), he was associated to the research group as Ph.D. candidate and scholarship holder of the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung. In his dissertation he researchered deliberation in anti-neoliberal protest groups. Other works of Mundo Yang focus on protests of unemployed, media discourses on genetically modified food and online communication.
