Beyond the enclave? Far-right mobilization, ethnic infrastructure and the well-being of immigrants and their descendants

WZB Talk by Jonas Wiedner

Jonas Wiedner is Research Fellow of the WZB Research Unit Migration, Integration, Transnationalization.

Abstract: Urban research assigns immigrant enclaves an ambiguous role. While such areas are seen as rich in beneficial ethnic infrastructures and networks, they also tend to be located in deprived and stigmatized inner-city neighborhoods. We study how the subjective wellbeing of immigrants and their descendants depends on the characteristics of the neighborhood and region they live in. In particular, we use novel ecologic data on the spatial density of ethno-religious minority associations, places of worship, and grocers, as well as the local mobilization capacities of far-right networks. We link this data to the geocoded survey data to predict wellbeing among immigrants and their descendants. Our results suggest that higher densities of ethno-religious minority organizations committed to fostering the generation of social capital (places of worship and especially ethnic civil society associations) contribute to increased wellbeing among persons of immigrant origin. Even more decisive is the extent of local mobilization of the far right, which erodes wellbeing especially among persons of non-european origin.
