Platform work has transformed how labour is organised, managed and contested. Digital platforms may present themselves as neutral intermediaries, yet they often control access to work, set prices, monitor performance and suspend accounts. Ratings, rankings and automated decisions can profoundly affect people’s livelihoods—frequently without transparency or effective collective representation.
On November 19–20, 2026, an interdisciplinary workshop on “Women and Work” will take place at the WZB Berlin Social Science Center. Organized by Carolin Deuflhard, Nicola Fuchs-Schündeln, Felix Holub, Lena Hipp, Jonas Jessen, and Anne Sophie Lassen, the workshop brings together economists and sociologists to discuss current research on gender and the labor market. Over two days, presentations will explore labor market outcomes, career development, and workplace experiences, fostering exchange across disciplines and research perspectives.
The workshop’s primary aim is to shift the debate from comparative statistics to models which emphasize the dynamics of international institutional variation and change by focusing on the further development of key insights from historical institutionalism such as (but not limited to) path dependence, unintended consequences, timing and sequencing effects and critical junctures. The issues addressed should be international in character, with an explicit focus on international institutions or the interaction of domestic and international levels.
How do courts come to decisions in hybrid legal contexts? Which rules and which procedures apply to manage normative plurality? And to which extent does legitimate and effective conflict resolution rely on valid statutory rules? These questions will be discussed with judges and legal experts from South Africa, Ethiopia, Pakistan, and Somalia. Die Veranstaltung wird gefördert vom Auswärtigen Amt/Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen.
