Lecture: Urbanization in China

Professor Luo, Chun, Yunnan University, Kunming, Yunnan, China

Urbanization is an enormous phenomenon in contemporary China. Urbanization promotes dramatic social changes and poses great challenges in China, such as massive rural-urban migration leading to a rural-urban population structural reversal, as well as too rapid expansion of metropolis. The presentation aims to show the ongoing process of urbanization, its characteristics and problems it creates using statistical data. Specifically, Professor Luo will focus on the puzzle of “peri-urbanization” in China, the situation of rural migrant workers in cities, and government policies for a new model of urbanization.
