The Donbas war in the light of the armed conflicts in the (post-)Soviet space
For decades, local authorities in Donetsk and Luhansk regions in the east of Ukraine cultivated the myth of the exceptional character of this area (commonly known as the region of Donbas) within the Soviet Union and then independent Ukraine. Arguments of belonging of Donbas either to Russia or to Ukraine were seriously discussed in Donetsk and Luhansk during the early post-communist transformation period of 1989-1991. Those discussions occurred under influence of violent territorial conflicts in other republics of the (former) USSR. There were a number of possible reasons why the conflict like Transnistrian was avoided in Ukraine back then, but for some of the local elites, arguments about Donbas belonging have never been settled.
As Donbas, the war zone since 2014, is the proclaimed aim of the current Russian invasion, the presentation is an attempt to review some local and Russian public arguments regarding this region.
