In recent years, the issue of immigration has become increasingly tied to the issue of terrorism. For instance, a 2016 Gallup poll across 14 European countries found that a median of 66 percent of respondents believed terrorism by non-residents to be a serious problem, while at the same time a median of 55 percent of respondents thought that migration is a similarly serious issue, with concerns about both issues being strongly positively correlated. This research project aims to answer three interrelated research questions. First, what are the determinants of terrorism? Second, what are the policy consequences of terrorism?
This project inquires how democratic decline has affected highly-skilled (im)mobility beyond exile and forced migration in the last decade. Acknowledging that migration is a multi-causal phenomenon and autocratization is only one of numerous (e)migration drivers it will scrutinize voluntary highly-skilled (im)mobility in two of the top four autocratizing countries worldwide in the last decade: Turkey and Hungary.
The "house of Islam" has become the house of war, terror, economic stagnation and dictatorship in many places. More and more Muslims are fleeing dictatorship and lack of freedom, terror and war, poverty and unemployment to the West - bringing with them not only their culture, but often also the problems of the Islamic world. Ruud Koopmans shows for the first time, on a broad empirical basis and by systematically comparing Muslim and non-Muslim countries and migrant groups, how the Islamic world on the one hand and Muslims in the West on the other are falling further and further behind in terms of democracy, education and economic situation.
This book focuses on Islamic constitutionalism, and in particular on the relation between religion and the protection of individual liberties potentially clashing with shariᶜa and the Islamic ethos. The analysis goes from general to particular, starting with a theoretical overview on constitutionalism, human rights and Islam, moving to the assessment of the post-Arab Spring Constitutions of Egypt and Tunisia, and concluding with a specific focus on the rights of sexual minorities and freethinkers.

Minority-majority tensions are among the most pressing issues of our time and a key factor in the rise of populism. The reemergence of majority nationalism raises new concerns over the tyranny of the majority. At the same time, fears over the erosion of majority groups’ cultural identity appear as a result of global migration. This calls for a reexamination of fundamental assumptions in liberal political theory and the meaning of nationhood in a globalized world.
In this subproject of the research group “Varieties of Reproduction Regimes”, a new international policy database is built. We collect data on reproduction policies in five fields of regulation: sexuality education, contraception, abortion, assisted reproductive technologies, pregnancy care. The final dataset will contain indicators of policies in these five areas across 30 high-income countries between 1980 and 2020.

My dissertation studies the provision of reproduction knowledge in school-based sexuality education from a comparative European perspective, with a specific focus on German-speaking countries. Sexuality education is a key channel through which knowledge is transmitted and remains a primary source of reproduction information for the majority of pupils. What is more, people’s knowledge about reproduction plays a crucial role in shaping their reproductive experiences and trajectories. Not least due to this, discussions surrounding sexuality education persist as a significant cultural battleground where debates revolve around notions of sexuality generally, but also around the level of state involvement in the provision of reproduction knowledge.
