Junior Research Group: Comparative Survey
The Junior Research Group “Comparative Survey” develops, implements and analyses the comparative public opinion survey “Public Attitudes towards the liberal script” (PALS). The goal of PALS is first and foremost to measure citizen attitudes in different countries around the globe towards what we call the liberal script. In a first wave, the survey has been conducted in 26 countries with over 50,000 respondents in 2021/2022. A second wave is currently in the field. The dataset(s) will be made publicly available after all necessary quality tests and data cleaning efforts have been done and a short inaugural period of data analyses by the core team as well as other members of SCRIPTS has concluded.
The study is set in the context of the changing balance of power and the changing narratives about emerging power configurations. We aim to explore the extent to which the rise of alternative models presents a challenge to the liberal script and how other actors in the region are responding to a "Western" liberal script and the challenges. While the notion of the "Asian way" has served to counter American and thus liberal hegemony for some time, it is now "liberal visions" of society that serve as a counter-hegemonic script to increasing Chinese dominance. "Asian scripts" (liberal or not) and the extent to which Asian states organize themselves and form alliances with each other based on these scripts' political and economic features are adressed.

The purpose of this dissertation project is to identify barriers to the social integration of Pakistani and Turkish immigrants on the level of interethnic contacts. Interethnic friendships are one of the indicators for social integration. The strongest measure are interethnic marriages which can be, just like friendships, shaped by individual preferences, structural meeting opportunities (Reinders 2004) and third-parties that can intervene in the mating process (Kalmijn 1998). Third-parties can be the family, the church or community and the state, which try to strengthen the group cohesion through social identification and endogamous norms as well as group sanctions/social control.

With few exceptions, research on the consequences of immigrants' relations with host society members has focused on the structural outcomes of such interethnic contacts, e.g. immigrants' placement in the job market. To expand upon this limited theoretical and empirical scope, this research examines the cultural consequences of immigrants' interethnic contacts with host society members. It will investigate (a) to what extent, (b) under which conditions and (c) how interethnic contacts with host society members shape the cultural beliefs (e.g. gender role attitudes, religious orientations) and values of immigrants, which all represent important facets of immigrants' acculturation in host societies.
